Citrulline is significantly more bioavailable than arginine because it bypasses first-pass metabolism. When you ingest arginine, gut and liver enzymes break down up to 70% of it. Citrulline escapes this gut-liver breakdown entirely, circulating to the kidneys, where it converts directly into arginine, making it much more effective.

I'm like 67 and I for basically the first time in my life can sprint and not even breathe hard or feel my heart pounding. It could be the L-citrulline I've been taking and maybe aged garlic but it freaks me out.

"L-Arginine Paradox." When you ingest L-Arginine orally, it has to pass through your intestines and liver. These organs contain high levels of an enzyme called arginase, which aggressively breaks down L-Arginine before it can ever reach your systemic bloodstream to be converted into Nitric Oxide. Multiple clinical studies have shown that acute oral supplementation with L-Arginine actually fails to significantly increase blood Nitric Oxide levels.

I believe citrulline would be better in terms of not competing with other amino acids, like arginine can do, where timing is an issue.

Keep in mind during a herpes outbreak to stop/lower arginine intake and increase lysine!

It's not for everyone, use it with caution. The problem is that more arginine does not automatically mean more beneficial nitric oxide. If the endothelium is under oxidative stress, if the BH4 cofactor is deficient, if inflammation is present, or if iNOS is activated, the pathway can shift toward superoxide/peroxynitrite production, which may potentially worsen oxidative stress. The authors of the VINTAGE MI study also mention the possibility of increased homocysteine and worsening endothelial function/atherosclerosis under certain conditions.

Fun fact, Arginine is high in peanuts. Citrulline is high in watermelon. Peanut Butter covered Watermelon slices. Reminder about Arginine, it's what most infections rely on to speed up cell division in viral and bacterial cells. Lysine counters that, you need 1.1: 1 of Lysine : Arginine, the greater the better. Another way to increase arginine... literally eat more protein. Most full proteins have high arginine, lysine, and other brain helpful aminos... Literally all of them helps smh. The best are high fat foods like Pork Rinds, Red Meat, Whole Milk (raw milk is slightly better but you can drink 2-4 more oz of regular milk to fix the lesser vitamins, minerals, and fats lol) --- Watermelon soup is good. Saute peanuts / peanut butter and actual butter. Add diced watermelon slices rind included, as it boils quickly add water and 1 lb of cooked/browned ground meat. Lower to simmer and cook for an hour. Peanut Butter makes for a good low temp cooking oil for soups. Melon turns to mush and the meat adds for a good protein additive. I usually do 3 tablespoons of peanut butter, or around 1/3 or 1/2 cup of peanuts. Spoon of butter. You can also braise watermelon slices and meat, this makes the iron in meat more bioavailable. Citrulline is heat stable, but it degrades from really long cooking times into Arginine, which then also degrades over time but much less so.
