Professor Michael Hudson's analysis of Rome is the best I've come across. To sum it up when oligarchs become more powerful than the state the downward spiral is ensured.

When the house you are living in is full of mould and dry rot. The ceilings are falling in the water and power does not work properly. And the most comfortable inhabitants are the rats and fleas. Then the only option is to burn the house down and start again, just putting a new lick of paint on it will just prolong the pain.

Professor Xueqin is a favorite of mine. His in-depths explanations of human cultures is something I’ve never seen or heard anyone else do, so open and without filters - and with logic and facts that really add knowledge and understanding. (My favorite Chinese viking!)
