Short Summary
- Hitchcock creatively minimized production costs by shooting in black and white using his TV crew.
- The film pioneered early viral marketing tactics to safeguard its massive central twist from the public until release.
- Close textual analysis reveals deliberate symbolic use of mirrors, paintings, and music (composed by Bernard Herman) to guide audience morality.
- The narrative structure mirrors Marian Crane and Norman Bates as uncanny doubles linked by a Mobius strip.
This video breaks down Alfred Hitchcock’s 1960 classic, Psycho, focusing on its lasting influence as the "mother of the slasher genre." We examine the innovative cinematography, the application of Freudian theory, and the genius behind disguising Norman Bates as a sympathetic character initially. Understanding these details reveals why the film’s tension remains unnerving even today, long after its famous twist became part of the cultural zeitgeist.

You gotta love the commitment to the bit. 😂
That morphing of mother's skull into Norman's face is definitely chilling and can be easily missed if you just turned your head for a second.
Was not prepared for that Mrs Bates jumpscare at the beginning 😨
Love the Busta Rhymes clip. I saw Psycho for the first time years after Busta Rhymes - Gimme Some More. It was a nice surprise when I heard that theme in the movie.

41:26 The parlor scene reminds me of the OLD saying, “Come into my parlor, said the spider to the fly.” Marion is the fly and Norman is the spider, although she doesn’t know it. By the way, birds like to eat spiders. The stuffed birds seem to be staring at Norman.
My mother went to see this on release and they really did stop people coming after the film started and had nurses to help people who couldn't handle the violence and horror! She was a bit shocked when Janet Leigh got killed as she was the focus of the movie but then suddenly...
People don't realize why Marion is killed off so early. It is because that changes the nature of the film. Before Marion dies it is a chase film. After she dies, it becomes a whodunit.
I also like thinking the surprised look on Abergashs face when he gets stabbed, not only is he shocked he’s been stabbed and is falling backwards down the stairs, but he’s also facing a crazy eyed man dressed as an old woman, his brain must’ve been on overload
Anthony Perkins played that role to the hilt! Holy Cow what a great actor
