Joe Rogan Experience #2420 - Chris Masterjohn
Mitochondrial Health: Leveraging Creatine, Sunlight, and Movement for Optimized Energy and Longevity
Unlock control over 75% of your aging trajectory by prioritizing precise mitochondrial health, creatine status, and nuanced nutritional intake. Learn why common dietary myths fail and how targeted movement optimizes systemic energy flow.
Short Summary
- Mitochondrial function underlies all health and aging processes, declining about 1% annually after age 18.
- Optimizing energy distribution via creatine effectively supplements recovery from sleep deprivation and TBI.
- Specific supplements like Methylene Blue and CoQ10 require targeted testing due to their potent but non-specific effects.
- Comprehensive exercise, emphasizing full-body skill (like gymnastics), provides greater longevity dividends than optimizing V2 max alone.
This discussion centers on prioritizing mitochondrial function as the root of health, covering how lifestyle factors influence cellular energy. Chris Masterjohn details actionable practices concerning sleep, supplementation, and training breadth. We dissect common advice regarding seed oils, exercise science, and cholesterol, offering an evidence-based framework for direct intervention before reaching for pharmaceuticals.

I have Crohn’s my entire small intestine was removed and I was told I had a rather short life expectancy. I negated all medical advice after that point refused medication and went carnivore. I run faster , lift more, and look younger than I did a decade ago. When I am in extreme distress I go liquid then clear liquid if I must. I vitamin load and test my blood. The vitamins I take are Niacin, A,D,B12-B6-Iron-vitamin C- 6 lions mane fish oil and vitamin en and biotin. I have doubled my current life expectancy I share these details only because I am the current record holder for living without a small intestine which will be officiated upon my death. Good luck, never give up never surrender.
Holy shit, I had to do a double take when I saw Chris Masterjohn’s name on JRE. I’m glad he’s getting the recognition he deserves.
Anytime we don’t get a stupid comedian or Mike Baker is a great day 🙌

I feel like Chris Masterjohn is one of the few nutrition researchers who still treats biochem as a discipline and not a marketing tool. You may not agree with him on everything, but he’s one of the last genuinely independent analysts left in a field dominated by groupthink.
The master of all Johns
You know its good when Joe actually lets his guest talk😂😂😂
This is one of those episodes where I wished it was 3+ hours long.
Masterjohn needs to be a regular guest. I was learning so much, had to take notes lol. Very good episode, thank you Joe and thank you Chris!
I am so greatful, Chris was my nutrition professor a decade plus ago. In my classes I constantly bring his name up for my students
