CFP Rankings Reaction - Josh Pate's College Football Show
Josh Pate Deconstructs Initial CFP Rankings and New Committee Criteria Implementation
Analyze how the committee applied new evaluation standards, revealing key shifts in how schedule strength and perceived team trajectory are prioritized over past results. Understand why established logic, like head-to-head results, was significantly overridden in the initial rankings.
Short Summary
- The Big 12 shows surprising strength early, placing three teams inside the top 13.
- The committee applied "Record Strength" by ranking Georgia Tech lower, despite their few losses, due to schedule weakness.
- Notre Dame secured a significant ranking advantage over Miami, despite Miami winning their direct head-to-head matchup.
- The initial release confirms the committee significantly values perceived team "trajectory" moving forward rather than strictly historical metrics.
Josh Pate breaks down the first 2025 College Football Playoff rankings, focusing on the committee’s implementation of stated goals, such as prioritizing schedule strength. This analysis explains the surprising gaps between ranked teams—like Iowa vs. the AP Poll—and highlights the precarious paths left for two-loss conference leaders like Utah and Texas.

The second ND dropped the Texas A&M game I looked at their remaining schedule and said, "yeah they are about to steamroll this weak schedule and get into the playoffs at 10-2". Since the inception of the committee in 2014, no team has gotten princess treatment more than ND.
Finally can look at the rankings and start to say "Yea thats fair"
my #1 takeaway is that the committee seems to value how teams are playing right now more than overall resume. That’s why Notre Dame is above Texas and Oklahoma, that’s why Pitt is ranked when not many expected them to be, that’s why Iowa is in the top 20 despite their entire resume being “we almost beat IU and blew out minnesota” that’s why Utah is 13th after their back to back 31 and 46 point wins. i don’t agree or disagree but it’s something interesting to look out for in the coming weeks.
It hurts JP to see BYU that high.
BYU should have got a lot more credit for defeating smu on the road last season especially by your standard
Penn State losing to Oregon was the blow that ended their season… look at Notre Dame bouncing back from 0-2 start… Penn State literally collapsed that night
BYU and Texas Tech both in the playoffs would be really fun to watch. Imagine Provo if BYU ends ranked 5-8.
If you’re giving that defense for Oregon, does Vandy still get credit for killing South Carolina & LSU?
