CFP Rankings Reaction - Josh Pate's College Football Show
Analyzing Initial CFP Rankings: Alabama Surge, Notre Dame Risk, and Miami's Narrow Hope
Discover why structural advantages place Alabama above Notre Dame, and uncover the specific, high-stakes ACC Championship scenario required for Miami to overtake the Irish in the final CFP selection.
Short Summary
- The initial CFP rankings confirmed analyst expectations regarding Alabama’s position relative to BYU, but exposed flaws in committee transparency.
- Josh Pate advocates vehemently that head-to-head results must unequivocally determine ranking order when team resumes are otherwise comparable.
- Conference championship winners from the SEC and Big Ten receive maximum ranking security due to the financial integrity of those events.
- Miami needs Duke to win the ACC title and BYU to lose its championship game just to keep their meager path open against Notre Dame.
This segment dissects the CFP selection committee’s controversial early decisions, focusing heavily on the Notre Dame vs. Miami dilemma. It outlines the risks undertaken by independent teams and argues for a strict adherence to meritocracy based on direct competition results rather than subjective analysis.

CFP chairman Hunter Yurachek stated that a key stat is Texas is the only team in their top 15 that lost to a team that was never ranked in the CFP rankings… Alabama lost to FSU WHO WAS NEVER RANKED IN THE CFP. How are these people making decisions based on incorrect information??
I’m an Utah fan and a BYU hater, but this is an absolute disgrace, can’t believe they’re not in.
So you earn your way in with cupcakes, is what i am hearing
If 2 G5 teams make it in there will be such severe rules changes that the G5 will have to create its own championship game
This is the reason the committee meetings should be televised to the public because I guarantee you what was said in that room was, "guys, we have to move Bama ahead of ND in case BYU beats TTU so that we can leave out ND instead of Bama". Allowing "people" to be making the decisions of who gets in and who doesn't is a serious problem. There needs to be black and white rules to determine the 12 and then the "committee" can choose the seeding.
That ESPN check is definitely hitting that bank
My Lord, Pate! The CFP moved Bama ahead of ND so they could move Bama back to 10 if they lose to GA and still keep them in the CFP. If Bama stayed at 10 and lost to GA, that would open the door for BYU or Miami over Bama.
Congrats on 500k Mr Pate
I think the official rival for Pate State should be BYU. 🤣
