The Paper is Missing Something...
Review of Peacock's 'The Paper': Why It Lacks Energy and Depth
Watch this review to discover why The Paper is merely watchable, not great, and exactly what major changes it needs to match The Office's comedic success.
Short Summary
- The initial season lands as "fine" but lacks the necessary chaotic energy and strong character anchors—like Michael Scott—found in its predecessor.
- Storylines could leverage the context of the collapsing news industry for crucial social commentary, which the show currently avoids.
- Improvement is possible, especially given how much the US Office improved after Season 1, but The Paper must take calculated risks. This overview analyzes the tone, character dynamics, and narrative structure of the first season of The Paper, providing actionable advice for how the creators can inject vital comedic momentum.

I don’t think it’s missing anything other than a second season to flesh everything out. I found the show to be entertaining and endearing. That’s all I needed
I think Abbot Elementary nalled the office vibe while still being its own original thing. It would be really cool if u made an analysis on the show because it really feels like the return of the classic sitcom. It also delves into real issues without being too preachy
Where are all the talking heads? It barely feels like there is a camera crew there, except when they look at the camera every now and then
Next video: Frank Reynolds from It's Always Sunny
the characters being too mild and lacking interesting dynamics with one another was my main gripe. There needs to be more contrast and context. I found myself wondering "why am I watching these exact people exist in this exact setting?", and I don't think the first season had a real answer yet.
I don't have Peacock so I can't even watch this, but I am happy that they already confirmed a season 2. Both the Office and Parks and Rec notoriously had first seasons that people largely disliked, and they went on to become beloved sitcoms because they were given the chance to improve. Nowadays a lot of shows are axed after a lackluster first season and so we never get the chance to see anything better out of them.
Skipping the 1st season of the US office is such a misstep 😭 Basketball, The Alliance... it's so good! Diversity Day might be in my top 5 episodes
They are too well adjusted lol
8:26 That catfish episode felt most like a random The Office episode
There does seem like there is something “off” with the lighting. The Office had some depth in its visuals, but The Paper seems two dimensional and I can only attribute that to the lighting and maybe even the color contrast. Just seems very washed out
