Description

This video essay analyzes the morality of Pam Beesly in The Office (owned by NBC). Pam and Jim are the most beloved love story in the Office, but Pam was engaged when their relationship started, and after they get together, many other men express interest in her. Is she leading them on like she did Jim? Is Pam a bad person? This video examines the choices Pam makes throughout The Office, some good, some bad, and answers questions many Pam haters have. Was she wrong to hold Jim back with Athlead? Does she lack ambition? Is she a real artist? Is she a cheater? And didn't she commit fraud to get the office administrator job? All questions will be answered by the end of this video. I disagree that she lead all of those men on. I think she is just nice and is sometimes afraid to be directly mean. A lot of women, especially timid women, face this issue because we are afraid to be directly mean in our rejection as it is often faced with insults or violence. Being friendly and kind to someone doesn’t mean you are leading them on, and she doesn’t really flirt with them, like Toby, she just makes comments to the camera. That isn’t flirting.

Was it ever confirmed that Pam was transferring the sale only to Jim? I felt as that was just Phyllis assuming.

I knew a girl exactly like Pam. Weirdly friendly with everyone, goes along with anything, sometimes starts a weird situation… fun to be around but you never know where you stand with those people. Do they like you or are they just too afraid to say no ? Are they flirty or just oddly friendly ? Are you their friend or just a person in their catalog ? I think people react strongly with her because it’s easy to project our frustrations with people we know onto her.

i cannot fathom how can someone read the athleap situation as pam not being supportive. jim has a pattern of making giant life decisions without consulting her, and it’s infuriating how pam just goes along with the house. not capitulating with athleap is growth.

The whole Brian subplot was such sloppy writing and served no use other than to make Pam look like an awful person.

Good analysis. None of The Office characters are especially consistent paragons of virtue, because it’s a comedy. We’re not supposed to take the characters that seriously. But I think the reason we get irked by Jim and Pam is because they are presented as audience surrogates — normal and relatable — so we’re predisposed to be on their side. But when we realize that they’re not that great, we feel betrayed. I think the reason we don’t see a lot of video essays breaking down the character flaws of Parks and Rec, a similar show, is because there are no true audience surrogates. All of the characters are goofy and unrelatable in some way. Even Leslie, the main protagonist, is wonderfully weird and imperfect. The Office works as a comedy, and I think it works best if we allow Jim and Pam to be in on the joke, too.

Pam is good, Pam is bad, Pam is human, just like us. And that's what scares us and makes us want to hate her
