Former Adult Film Star Fights Restitution Following Premeditated Murder Conviction

Analyze the complex legal aftermath of a revenge murder, focusing on motive, the victim family's vigilante attack, and the ongoing dispute over restitution calculations for projected lost earnings.

Short Summary

  • Chelsea Perkins (Selena Savage) pled guilty to murdering Matthew Dunmire in Cuyahoga Valley National Park, citing past perceived rape as motive.
  • Dunmire’s parents subsequently attempted a botched vigilante killing spree against Perkins, resulting in another woman being shot and the mother’s later suicide during capture.
  • Perkins received a 22.5-year sentence but is now challenging the $596,000 restitution ordered, specifically contesting the calculation of lost future earnings for the musician victim.

This segment dissects the premeditated nature of the murder, the shocking secondary crime committed by the victim's family, and the unique legal hurdles involved in calculating victim compensation in federal cases regarding lost lifetime earnings.

Former adult film performer Chelsea Perkins, known online as “Selena Savage,” drove from Virginia to Ohio and executed her former classmate Matthew Dunmire inside Cuyahoga Valley National Park, later claiming she did it because she believed he raped her years earlier. Before her arrest, Dunmire’s mother and her partner attempted a botched vigilante attack disguised as a UPS delivery, shooting the wrong woman before being captured. Perkins is now serving more than 22 years in federal prison and is fighting a court-ordered $596,000 restitution payment to Dunmire’s family, arguing the calculation of his projected future earnings is unfair. My best friend was murdered when I was 16. I testified at her killers 3rd re-sentencing hearing in 2015. I couldn’t believe I was testifying at 40yrs old over something that happened when I was 16. Two of the resentencing were due to age. One was 16 when he did it. So they gave him the death penalty. Then the supreme courts overturned that decision due to him being 16 when it happened. He got life without parole. Then the Supreme Court decided that was cruel and unusual punishment for a “child”. He got life with possibility of parole after 30 yrs, which coincided with that last resentencing. His parole was denied, but they told us he would most likely get out the next time he came up for parole. I watched her mom become a shell of who she was, and her dad become filled with anger. It’s so unfair for families and friends of murder victims to go through so many hearings over so many years. I know why it happens, but I really wish there was a better way.
