You’ll learn: -How to become a more present, engaged, and emotionally available father -How to handle the unspoken pressure many dads carry and how it gets in the way of connection -The conversations that can shift generations and how to start them now. -What James wishes he’d done differently and what he’s proud of now You don’t have to be a dad to take something meaningful from this conversation. I held my stepdad at arms length for years. He was my mom's childhood sweetheart, they went their separate ways and then reconnected after 30 years. I was 12 when he and my mom got together, but I always kept my heart from him, even though he loved me like his own child. He was more of a Dad to me than my own father EVER was, and I recognized that, but I didn't understand WHY I couldn't allow myself to show him love. As an adult who moved away with my family, he would tell me, "just call your ol dad and say 'hi'." But I would always complain and push back- I'm busy, there's nothing new to say, etc. THEN one evening his lung collapsed and he was rushed to the hospital. He was put on a ventilator and over the course of 2 weeks, he never recovered. My mom kept saying, "he's getting better, they're going to attempt to take him off of the vent today and see how he does" but he was too far gone. The doctor's finally convinced my mom that the time had come to remove him from the vent and I and my family made the trip to be with him. The last time I spoke to him was 2 weeks before and I will FOREVER hold that regret in my heart. I had so much childhood trauma, I wasn't capable of loving someone who loved me unconditionally and I will always regret that I never allowed him to feel that from me. I almost made the same mistake with my husband of 30+ years. He has stuck by me and loved me when I couldn't love him or myself back. I have since realized our time here is NOT infinite and I NEVER want to have that regret with anyone else.

I ❤️James Patterson mentioning that we need to raise thinking children. One things that often works, when a child says “I don’t know,” reply “If you did know, what would it be?” James is really trendy with that sweater

Never knew dads like this exist.. dad with a book, i would love my son to see it, his biological dad was not ready to be a dad, but i hope he l meet that person in his life who can be that father figure for him... I left home at 18, found my parents figures in my environment and have more compassion and understanding for my own parents now... They did the best they could, like all of us do..
