Dissecting Pope Francis's Definition of 'Pro-Life' Amid the Durbin Award Controversy

Understand the distinction between precise Catholic moral teaching and the political slogan "pro-life." This analysis explains why honoring an "infanticidal politician" is doctrinally indefensible, regardless of papal nuance on other issues.

Short Summary

  • Catholic doctrine strongly forbids the murder of babies, making the Durbin award nomination unacceptable under fundamental moral law.
  • Pope Francis attempted to contextualize "pro-life" beyond abortion alone, referencing the death penalty and immigration policy.
  • The speaker argues "pro-life" is a political slogan, not a precise moral category, which incorrectly groups non-negotiable moral sins with prudential issues.

This segment dissects Pope Francis's nuanced response to Senator Dick Durbin's retracted award nomination from the Archdiocese of Chicago. It provides a robust defense of the non-negotiable status of opposing abortion within Catholic teaching, contrasting this with the complex development of doctrine regarding the death penalty.

I've noticed something here in Italy: the last two popes, especially Pope Francis, are very appreciated by non-believers, who, however, continue to be non-believers... something doesn't add up...

Last year there were 26 death penalty cases in the US. Last year 1,038,000 infants in the womb were given the death penalty. Hmmmm

The pope has an obligation to speak plainly and clearly and not play politics or skirt around issues - the church should be in the world not of the world.

Sen. Durbin says that he personally has a moral objection to abortion, yet over his entire career has voted for laws which would allow unfettered infanticide up to and after birth. This is a level of cognitive dissonance that can only be described as sociopathic! Very sad to hear our pope speaking indifferently about this.

It's strange that he knew the senator served for 40 years but also said that he doesn't know the particulars of the situation.

I have frequently respectfully told my dad he's wrong. I am a Catholic. I respect the Pope and honor him. Saying that the death penalty is basically the same as abortion is utterly insane and suggesting that a politician who loves the fact that children get brutally sacrificed might get an award is very bad. That said, I do hope the Holy Father clarifies, and that some understanding can be had here
