The Car Market Is Broken
Analyzing America's Contradictory Car Market: Soaring Prices Meet Record Defaults
Discover why auto loan defaults are hitting historic highs while new car prices exceed $50,000, and learn how this divergence reveals the widening K-shaped economic split.
Short Summary
- Record-high delinquency rates signal severe financial distress among subprime borrowers.
- New vehicle prices have surged over 30% since 2019, pushing average payments above $700 monthly.
- The divergence exposes a K-shaped recovery, rewarding investors while punishing those financing depreciating assets like cars.

Some people are very proud of their $1000 car payment
Cars are more expensive and quality seems to have gone down. So the longer term loans are now even more of a bad idea.
I agree. I bought a 93 Nissan for 2k, 10 years ago. She just hit 300k(186kmi) and running strong. My mechanic is my hero. Love that car.
Jaspreet was that kid back in high school who was nice enough to let me copy his math homework. Jaspreet, you’re an awsome guy.
Debt free and no payments. It’s not worth it. I work with guys who have f150s and 2500s and blah blah. One guy has a payment of 1100 and said that’s cheap. Freakin blown away. I show him how much money it’s really costing him every month when I show him my investment earnings
My car is 10 years old, I'm riding until the wheels fall off!
Don't forget these newer vehicles are designed on purpose to function like a dumpster fire. These plastic sh*t boxes will get you killed. They have designed them so YOU can't fix them unless you pay for proprietary tools that cost tens of thousands of dollars. The system was hijacked and designed for these car manufacturers to monopolize the vehicle market. For example, "Force everyone into an expensive EV and then when the battery fails it'll cost them the cost of another car to get it fixed."
I got a 25 year old vw polo had it for 23 years. Still works fine. Bought it cash. Never had a car note!
