Apple MacBook Neo: The Most Disruptive Entry-Level Laptop

This $499 entry-level MacBook leverages iPhone chip technology to deliver performance rivaling older MacBook Airs, positioning it as a major threat to Windows and Chromebooks.

Short Summary

  • The MacBook Neo utilizes the A18 Pro iPhone chip, achieving M1-level performance benchmarks.
  • It offers premium build quality and keyboard feel, despite compromises like an LCD screen and 8GB RAM.
  • This device is positioned perfectly for students, writers, and casual users, forcing a re-evaluation of budget laptop needs.

This review assesses Apple's supposedly basic entry-level laptop, the MacBook Neo, priced at $499 (or $599 standard). By integrating high-end iPhone silicon, Apple has created a surprisingly capable machine that undercuts previous MacBook Air pricing significantly, making it a highly disruptive product for the budget laptop market.

Genuinely hope this thing sets a new bar to meet and shakes the entry level laptop market. It is absolutely insane that, especially in stores, you can still find laptops with 1366x768 tn panels for 500+ eur/usd.

I remember seeing Apple ads where the tagline was “does more, costs less.” I think we might be back to that today. Edit: People seem to miss the fact that this is a budget device. In the realm of Chromebooks, this thing absolutely does more than those things - this runs full macOS out of the box.

The fact that it's a new category of product and yet they didn't even do a keynote for it's announcement tells me how confident they were to let the product speak for itself.
