The Cannibalization of Gaming: How Corporate Greed Replaced Creativity
Investigate how massive corporate acquisitions and monetization tactics destroyed the creativity of the "Golden Era" of gaming. Discover the insidious psychological mechanisms extracting continuous spending, even as game quality plummets.
Short Summary
- Corporate Takeover: Document the flood of Big Tech and institutional investment (like BlackRock and Saudi funds) into gaming, shifting focus from quality content to maximizing shareholder return via live services.
- Psychological Extraction: Analyze how mechanisms like loot boxes, pioneered by companies like EA and Valve, exploit proven gambling psychology (BF Skinner principle) to hook players.
- Developer Devastation: Detail the systematic destruction of innovative studios (Westwood, Bullfrog, Visceral) whose passion projects could not pivot fast enough to microtransaction factories.
- Player Experience Collapse: Contrast the autonomy and community of older titles (Skyrim, WoW) with modern releases plagued by bugs, contemptuous monetization (e.g., Fallout 76), and compulsory engagement (FOMO).
This analysis contrasts the creative purity of the gaming 'Golden Era' with the predatory monetization structures enforced today. It maps the financial engineering driving mass layoffs and poor product delivery, warning that this "technofudalism" erodes player ownership and satisfaction across all digital media.

Remember when games were made by one team and not a corporation with focus groups and shareholders
I play games to relieve stress and now all they do is stress me out.
Games changed from art meant to be enjoyed to content meant to be consumed.
I refuse to play any video game that requires you to be online to play.
Because games back then are made by gamers for gamers now is made by crazy people for profit.
corporations suck the soul out of every good thing left in the world
We can complain all we want, as long as people keep buying the slop, they will keep serving the slop.
There was *NOTHING* like the anticipation of buying a new game and reading the manual on the drive back home, while dad gets caught in every red light lmao.
