Hollywood is For Sale | Disney's AI Sell Out | Running Man | Grace v Brie - Friday Night Tights 380
Panel Decries Media Failures, AI Dystopia, and Hollywood's Creative Decline
Understand the consensus critique regarding recent blockbuster flops (Predator: Badlands) and the disturbing socio-cultural implications of emerging AI replication technology used to digitally resurrect the dead.
Short Summary
- Predator: Badlands is tracking toward a catastrophic flop, criticized for incorporating distracting modern tropes rather than sticking to established genre fundamentals.
- The misuse of intellectual property (IP) is perceived as being driven by corporate mandates rather than genuine creative vision, leading to formulaic content ("Disneyification").
- Advanced AI tools capable of replicating deceased loved ones present a deeply dystopian threat, subverting the grieving process and enabling perverse manipulation.
- The panel heavily critiqued Hollywood's shift toward "morally correct" narratives over factual or audience-driven creative choices, using Brie Larson and The Marvels as key examples.
This session features a sprawling discussion covering film box office performance, the toxic trajectory of fandom culture (especially fanfiction), and profound concerns about the immediate future of AI ethics in personal and corporate spheres. The panel synthesizes audience backlash against perceived Hollywood mandates with direct criticism of entertainment trends destroying valuable intellectual property.

Fan fiction became REALLY weird, REALLY fast. Supernatural handled it very well. They became aware that people were shipping Sam and Dean, who are biological BROTHERS. So they straight up just had that in the show, and showed Sam and Dean being disturbed by these freaks. Dean; But, we are brothers!? Sam: It doesn't seem to matter to them.
On that whole AI fake grandma stuff, C.S. Lewis once wrote that "If you look for truth, you may find comfort in the end; if you look for comfort you will not get either comfort or truth only soft soap and wishful thinking to begin, and in the end, despair."
The creepy AI grandma is essentially the Mirror of Erised from Harry Potter. It will give you want you want, but lead you into oblivion. Even if kept into the purest of intentions it will destroy people.

8th week I’ve been watching. As someone who is 24 it feel great to have something to look forward to at the end of the week on Friday nights. Just like all the showings growing up as a kid on Friday nights. You know when tv was good.
Raising a baby to see an AI avatar of a departed grandmother he never knew as a person is diabolical too. The baby has no conception that the simulacrum in front of him isn't a person. I assume it's a subscription service so hook the baby on grandma and now they've got a subscription for that baby's whole life.
The conversation about AI taking on the appearance of a dead family member reminds me greatly of a book called Goodbye for Now by Laurie Frankel- a man creates an algorithm for his girlfriend to be able to email (and eventually video chat) with her recently-departed grandmother, and from there, they offer it up as a way for other people to deal with their grief, only for some to use it to cling to the ones they lost. A truly heartbreaking moment took place in a children’s hospital, when parents were desperately trying to get their dying kids to say and do things for them so they could be preserved on camera and later used to format a computerized version of them. It’s been a while since I’ve read it, but that kind of subject matter sticks with you.
I really thought we were going to get graced by a Grace visit today 🤣
That little dog changed Gary's life forever
I always appreciate that the whole panel shuts up when the guests speak - I wish the mainstream media or tv interviewers could be so considerate.
