Short answer: the current president of Panama has supposedly expressed interest in expediting the naturalization (citizenship) process.

I just moved my family to Panama in February 2025. So far we love it here.

Yes it is very important to tell people that residency rules are strict for citizenship application. 5 years of residency only leaving for short durations.

The oldest rule in the world still applies: It's not what you know but who you know.

I'm Panamanian and I know of people living here legally as a resident and married to a Panamanian and living here and it took him almost 30 years to get citizenship. Paperwork gets lost and it takes years. So yeah. Unchanged.

Be very careful with Panamanian banks. I know multiple people who were financially destroyed under a prior regime there. The Panamanian courts will not find for a foreigner, and this is still you even if you are naturalized.

Gone are the days of buying teak farms for Panamanian citizenship.

I was naturalized as a Panamanian citizen in 2013. Martinelli signed my letter of naturalization. I have lived in Panama for the past 26 years. I am fluent in Spanish which I learned here in Panama as it is the language used in our home..The wife is from the Dominican Republic.. The Panamanian passport is pretty good. Visa free travel to European countries and all of Latin America. The reason I wanted Panamian citizenship was not to get a second passport. It was because Panama is my permanent home. I vote in the Panamanian elections and joined a Panamanian political party.
