The tardigrade—capable of surviving extreme drying, freezing, heat, radiation, the vacuum of space, maybe even the asteroid impact. Who knows, maybe some have hitchhiked on impact ejecta to Mars. And according to a new study, the tardigrade can survive most of the ravages of the Martian surface. Most. When the researchers added a chemical that’s both abundant on Mars and horrifically toxic, even the tardigrade wound down. So if Earth’s most intrepid extremophile can’t handle the hostility of the red planet, can anything? Maybe, yes, even today. Let’s see where Martian life and tardigrade astronauts may still be hiding. If we ever do find life that's unrelated to what's here on Earth, it'll mean we get to add a new top level taxonomic rank: Origin.

Just a tad off-topic, but kudos to whoever designed the animated 'hope' and warning signs. They're easily pretty enough for any video game or film, but they're also clear enough to be used for actual signage, physical or otherwise. Good job.

The more I know about the difficulty of maintaining any kind of life on Mars, the more I understand the danger of the human destruction of the ecosystem that maintains human life on Earth.
