Short Summary
- The movie features subtle, unforced humor derived from the dry, sarcastic acting styles of Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson.
- The narrative compellingly explores crushing loneliness, even when physically surrounded by people.
- The viewer strongly related the isolation experienced by the characters to a personal period of intense loneliness while married.
- The viewer experienced internal stress constantly pleading internally for the characters not to cheat on their spouses.

There’s a rare softness in this film, as if time itself stands still. It's like a long, calm breath in the middle of chaos. top-10 favorite movie of all time
This is one of those movies where I didn't feel sad, angry or even happy when it ended. I just felt content. Felt like I just witnessed life happen, it's so weird to explain. Also, we don't talk enough about how good Scarlett Johansson is in this. She's really exceptionally good.
This beautiful movie is about two humans connecting. Two people each outside of their element. Two lonely humans, each with their own issues in life, that become kindred souls.
The connection between Bob and Charlotte isn’t about romance or happy endings, it’s about being understood for a moment in the noise.
Its called Lost in Translation because many people feel like they are surrounded by crowds of people they don't understand and who don't understand them. It's about celebrating the rare and magical connections that can happen when two people "who speak the same language" find each other. I think it is a true work of art. And Bill Murray is my spirit animal. Thank you for watching this one.
Here's a story: I found a credit card on the ground and decided to looked up the name. It was a local doctor so I emailed him. He said the card was stolen and already canceled but asked if I'd sent it to him so I did. Later I got a letter back with a thank you and a bunch of movie gift certificates. I took the girl I was dating to see this movie.
Bill Murray was great in this movie, with this being his only Oscar nomination to date. He really deserved to win, in my opinion.
Great movie about loneliness and making unexpected, memorable connections.
This really is Bill Murray's finest performance. He should have one the Oscar.
I love the idea that whatever was said in that whisper in the end of the movie is so private, so intimate, and so meaningful that even we, an audience of voyeurs, don't get to know. That kind of storytelling maturity is rare.
