Description

We're watching Spy Game (2001) for the first time. We expected a fun Brad Pitt/Robert Redford spy movie, and then somehow spent most of it trying to figure out who to trust, what the CIA was actually doing, and whether we were supposed to be mad or impressed. The spy stuff was a really good time, but this is also one of those movies where we wanted someone to sit us down afterward and explain the little things we missed. Robert Redford being that calm while clearly knowing more than everybody else is exactly the kind of stressful that works. Also, Brad Pitt in this movie... we get it. Brad Pitt passed on playing the title role in The Bourne Identity for this project. And it's fun to watch Robert Redford and Brad Pitt working together.

I love this film, especially because Robert Redford is so good as the mastermind controlling everything and everyone while orchestrating his protégé's escape—all with humor and a real knack for pulling a fast one. It’s almost as if he’d managed to get out of the mess in Three Days of the Condor in one piece and continued his career in intelligence.

This one of these «good old» movies with a story and not only a bunch of CGI action scenes.

Thank you so much for doing this reaction! I lost count on how many times I have watched this movie. Musical score is fantastic, especially after the rescue, they are flying back and when Tom realizes it was Nathan that got him and his woman out. Also, this movie was so slept on. I could watch it 100 times and never get bored. Robert Redford and Brad Pitt are perfect together.

Spy Game is the first (and only) time Robert Redford and Brad Pitt actually acted together, but it wasn't the first time they worked together -- Redford directed Pitt in 1992's A River Runs Through It.

I don't know how true this is, but I remember reading somewhere that both Redford and Pitt were shown the scripts independently and both, without the knowledge of the other, insisted that they would take the role if the other were cast in the film. Apparently they had something of a mentor/mentee relationship back in the day. RIP Robert...
