Description

Arthur C. Clarke was one of the most important science fiction writers of the twentieth century. Along with writers like Isaac Asimov and Robert Heinlein, Clarke helped shape modern science fiction and gave it a sense of wonder and seriousness. He was more than just a storyteller. He was a futurist and a visionary. Clarke predicted satellite communications long before they became real and often wrote about how technology might change the future. Clarke’s stories stand out because they mix real science with a sense of mystery. He didn’t just write about rockets or computers. He wrote about humanity’s place in the universe and the bigger questions we face. One of my favorite stories of his is The Nine Billion Names of God, first published in 1953. It’s very short, just a few pages, but it has a huge idea at its center. It’s a perfect example of how Clarke could take a simple idea and build it into a memorable ending. 👽 Please consider supporting this channel on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/ideasoficeandfire or PAYPAL - https://paypal.me/QuinnsIdeas?locale.x=en_US 🎨 Art: https://www.artstation.com/artwork/kDNzzA 🎵 Music: https://www.youtube.com/@JamezDahlMusic 📚 Get These Books! The most terrifying part of the ending with the stars going out, is that Arthur C. Clark was wholly aware that it takes hundreds to millions of years from a star's light reaching Earth, so implicit in the fact that the light of the stars is gone, is that the universe is ending with Earth as it's focus, The very last thing will be Earth in darkness, then nothing.

Overhead, without any fuss, the stars were going out. That line has been stuck in my head for something like 45 years.

Between having a newborn, my night shift schedule, and just a lack of overall energy. I haven’t really had a chance to read as much as a would like. Your channel really scratches that itch for me. Please keep it up.

The idea that a content creator will have their income deleted by YouTube for simply saying a word like "suicide", "murder", "pedophile", "sexual assault", "pornography", even just "killed" or "die" is outrageous! We all as humans are aware of these concepts. They are part of human life and as such need to be acknowledged. They were common terms on network TV for DECADES. It just shows how anti-human and sterile what was once called "You"Tube has become. It's become nothing but an antiseptic commercial with an "AI" generated face. It really is time for something new!

This is like the horror story where NASA beams a message into the Boötes Void only to receive the message "Hello." as the void starts rapidly expanding.

I adore this short story! I remember being stoned with my friends at university and reading this to them as the night grew long and witnessing their gasps of terror and shocked expressions as I read the last line. To give ones friends light existential trauma is one of life's simple yet satisfying pleasures. Its one of my all-time favourite memories.

Please do Childhoods End , people think it’s a “nice alien invasion” story but I think it’s one of the most terrifying stories ever 😂

I read this story when I was 15 and now 52 years later I still feel the same sensation of slowly sinking to shock. Truly a classic.

Oh my god. Now realizing the Futurama episode Godfellas is slightly based on this.

I like how the "end of the universe" in this story isn't played out like a horrible fate, it's just... What we were supposed to do. It's not a happy ending, but not a sad one either. It just is.
