Aaron Alexander & Andrew Gordon react to Episode 6 of Heated Rivalry, the season finale of the Crave / HBO sports romance series adapted from Rachel Reid’s novel. The finale delivers long-awaited emotional payoff as secrecy gives way to honesty, and love finally becomes a choice instead of a risk. The episode opens on a defining league moment as Scott Hunter (François Arnaud – Midnight, Texas, Blindspot) accepts the MVP award and publicly comes out during his speech, watched by Kip (Robbie G.K. – Departure, Murdoch Mysteries). Inspired by Scott’s courage, the focus shifts to Shane Hollander (Hudson Williams – Bel-Air, Holly Hobbie) and Ilya Rosanov (Connor Storrie – Slasher, The Porter), who retreat to Shane’s cottage and finally allow themselves joy without secrecy. Ilya reveals he’s been exclusive with Shane for months, and the two open up about their pasts—culminating in Ilya’s devastating confession about losing his mother at a young age. When Ilya suggests marrying Svetlana for citizenship, the conversation becomes a turning point. Shane refuses fear-driven compromises and instead imagines a future built together: a suicide prevention charity, transforming their rivalry into a public friendship, and finding a way for Ilya to play closer to home. In the episode’s emotional climax, Ilya finally says “I love you,” and Shane says it back—bringing their years-long push and pull to a cathartic close. The finale ends with family reckoning and acceptance. After Shane’s father unexpectedly discovers them together, Shane chooses honesty and comes out to his parents, receiving an apology from his mother that reframes his entire upbringing.
