This looks like fun, very excited for this Mr. Rogers prequel.
I don’t think y’all understood that Tom Hanks is on a destroyer as part of a convoy being HUNTED by German subs. He’s not in a sub.
I see this movie is adapted from the book, “The Good Shepherd” written by C.S. Forester in 1955. Like Tom Clancy, Forester knew his subject. During WWII, Forester was the official Historian for the Royal Navy. I recommend you get a copy and read it ahead of the film. It is amazing.
The Allies lost thousands of supply vessels sailing from the U.S. to England b/c of the German "Wolf Pack" submarine hunting groups. They were the epitome of sitting ducks. But it looks like with the heavy use of Sonar, which they really hadn't perfected at the onset of the war, I think this might be one of the first convoys to have a fighting chance using Destroyers/Sub Hunters....these "Greyhounds." They could actually "see" their enemy now and not only defend from them, but eventually hunt down and destroy them. It was the beginning of the end of the German U-Boat. The other side of the story was made famous by the movie "Das Boot."
I’m an extra in this movie! I made it in the trailer in the hotel scene with the Christmas tree. A lot of the ship scenes were filmed in the USS KIDD in Baton Rouge, LA.

Not a submarine he's commanding. A destroyer that's escorting merchant ships across the Atlantic from US to England against German submarine wolf packs.
"I'm the captain now." Goddammit, Greg.
When he recalibrated the radar and suddenly there were so many contacts ... tell me you didn't have flashbacks to Aliens!
Captain Phillips, U-boats are like a box of chocolates. You never know when they gonna strike.
