The film opens with a surprisingly strong and intense origin sequence before jumping into a large-scale space mission where Jean comes into contact with the Phoenix Force, leading to some of the most visually impressive and comic-inspired moments in the series. As highlighted in the reaction, the early portions of the film feel far more focused and intimate than expected, leaning heavily into character psychology—especially with Professor X, whose decisions and manipulation of Jean’s past create major consequences throughout the story . James McAvoy delivers one of his most layered performances as Xavier, portraying a more flawed and arrogant version of the character, while Michael Fassbender brings a grounded intensity to Magneto that adds weight to their ongoing ideological conflict. Sophie Turner fully commits to Jean’s internal struggle, balancing vulnerability, rage, and instability as her powers spiral out of control. The film also delivers some standout X-Men action, particularly in its team-based sequences and the climactic train fight, where characters like Cyclops (Tye Sheridan — Ready Player One, Mud), Storm (Alexandra Shipp — Straight Outta Compton, Barbie), and Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee — The Power of the Dog, Let Me In) get some of their strongest moments in the franchise.
