Hopkins won the Oscar for his performance despite only having 16 mins of screen time. A truly incredible and haunting performance from an all time great.
38:22 Here's what most people miss about the sketch of Clarice and the physical contact just before it; Lecter only draws the things he cares about, the things that give him actual pleasure (recreations of art and architecture). Given that he's a sociopath and that humans really don't matter to him it indicates that Clarice has really made an impression on him in a way that probably no other person ever really has. It's an incredibly human moment for someone who has never really learned how to be one.
Fun fact: TedLevine (Buffalo Bill) and Brooke Smith (Catherine Martin) developed a quirky relationship while filming the movie. In between their intensely dark scenes, they cracked all kinds of jokes about the scenes and script. The crew started to get creeped out by their banter. Brooke later said in an interview that the reason why she and Ted did that was to psychologically protect themselves.
What’s really sort of genius is that Hannibal was dropping clues to what Buffalo Bill was up to the whole movie. When he tells the senator that he loves her suit that was a great subtle moment.
25:38 Dr Pilcher is actually the only time Clarice is asked out in this movie in a non-creepy way. Is it really an appropriate time? Not necessarily, but the way he does it is straightforward and non-threatening, and when he's rejected, he simply accepts it and moves on. It's an interesting contrast to Dr Chilton, whose initial pickup attempt is condescending, and his reaction to her rejection is to turn petty and bitter.
*Fun Facts:* Anthony Hopkins actually based all of Hannibal’s famous mannerisms on animals. His cold yet alluring demeanor, his disturbing stares, his ability to attack with surprising speed, all based on spiders and crocodiles. He also had input into his outfits, he said that Hannibal would want his jumpsuit almost tailored to him and that his hair should be greased back like a rat. Also, during the famous scene of Clarice telling Hannibal about the lambs, the script originally called for a flashback of Clarice’s story, but the director wisely decided to have the scene focus entirely one Anthony and Jodie’s performances, saying “I feel like would be kicked out of the Directors Guild if I cut the camera away from these two during this scene”.
Jodie Foster did such a great job as Clarice, as did Anthony Hopkins with Hannibal.
Winner of 5 Oscars including Best Picture. Making it the first and only horror thriller film to win in all categories.
Nobody seems to clock that when they go to examine the body, the reason Starling is able to get all the cops to leave is because she drops into her West Virginia accent. They realize she's from there.
