Description

Justin Fairfax murder-suicide. Black Male Psychologists break it down The deaths of former Virginia lieutenant governor Justin Fairfax and his wife, Cerina, are examined not as an isolated tragedy, but as part of a deeper crisis. Roland Martin speaks with Drs. Alduan Tartt and Kevin Washington about the issues driving a Black male mental health crisis that can lead to tragic outcomes when left unaddressed. The conversation centers on the reality that many Black men are conditioned to suppress pain, avoid vulnerability, and carry emotional burdens without support. That silence creates pressure with no release. Roland, Dr. Alduan Tartt and Dr. Kevin Washington do not excuse the violence because “Serena did not deserve to be killed”. They refuse to ignore the conditions that allow these devastating moments to happen. The panel lays out how emotional suppression, lack of access to care, and cultural expectations around masculinity create a dangerous environment where men are “yelling… I need help… but you can’t hear it.” The panel discussion points to a pattern, not a one-off event. There is often a buildup, a “runway of things” leading to the breaking point, and when those warning signs are ignored or dismissed, the consequences can be irreversible. Strength is not silence. Real strength is vulnerability, accountability, and the willingness to seek help before it is too late. Without intervention, without spaces for Black men to process pain, and without confronting the stigma around mental health, the same cycle will continue. If these root issues are not addressed, “we’re gonna be right back here.” _ We’ve launched our official Telegram channel. At ten years old, now 70, I live with the memory of my father trying to kill my mother and seeing her fight for her life. My prayers to the children and both sides of the family.

My husband held myself and our daughter at gunpoint for several hours ultimately, I was able to get her and her friend out; yes I had someone else’s child. I watched him shoot himself in the head. I understand how a man can be physically, strong and mentally weak. During my healing time, I made the decision to get my masters in clinical mental health counseling I wanted African-Americans to be my focused because of the stigma going back generations. This discussion is much needed.
