Last story: She doesn’t even have to go a week without dairy like Rslash says. If she really wants a milkshake, she can get one, drink it in her car or at a park or something like that, throw it away in a public trash can, and go back to the house. I’m with Rslash. I feel like this is intentional.

Why does the sister want OP to watch her kids anyway? That would require the dog and the kid to be close.

Story 1: It's not just a golden retriever. Based on OP's description, it's a well trained golden retriever that can sit quietly in one spot for an extended period. I'm not an expert, but that sounds like the ideal pet for exposing a baby to, to get them use to being around dogs.
