Neil deGrasse Tyson Reflects on Getting Older
Embracing Aging Through Continuous Intellectual Growth
Resist the myth that aging means decreasing value by prioritizing intellectual expansion over physical prime. Discover how constant learning combats ossification and deepens life's meaning.
Short Summary
- Overcome societal pressure treating aging as inevitable decline by focusing on continual mental expansion.
- Use the awareness of mortality to create urgency and meaning in daily accomplishments.
- Define wisdom as the juxtaposition of new knowledge, not just the recall of past successes.
This discussion explores resisting obsolescence through intellectual rigor. Neil deGrasse Tyson relates personal history to argue that while physical decline is inevitable, mental growth must be constant to avoid glorifying past achievements.

I"m a75 year old woodworker, carpenter, boat builder, college educated, when I was in my mid twenties, I worked with a man older than me. He told me "If you don't learn something new everyday, you are essentially dead. I have lived my life trying to learn something new every day.
I'm 66. I have achy joints & move slowly, but I'm happier than I've ever been in my life. I'm low-income, but I learn new things every day. Thanks, YouTube 💜
At 77 I feel like a time traveler. I remember the accomplishments of every ten year period. In the 1960s I went from the sixth grade to being a college graduate. In the 1970s I went from being a soldier to being married with new house and two boys. Each ten years was a huge leap forward. The next ten years will likely be my last leap. What a journey.
What is one wise lesson you'd like to tell your younger self?
I am 87 years old and I am grateful for each day that I get.
I retired at 50 and I’m 63 still playing basketball and Call of Duty. Never grow up, I’m still a kid at heart.
I'm 82 now...I try to learn something new every day and do a good deed every day. This is the best time of my life.
I absolutely love how funny Neil finds Chuck. His honest laughter shows a genuine friendship and adoration. What a great laugh you have.
"Awareness of your ignorance is the path to knowledge" hit deep.
I’m 93. Thanks for the inspiration. I’m so grateful to have participated in this crazy experiment. Great ride.
