Description

When will the last supernova be? Neil deGrasse Tyson and Chuck Nice explore types of novas, freaky binary star systems, core collapse, standard candles, and the explosive future of Betelgeuse with astrophysicist Michael Shara. What’s the difference between a nova and a supernova? We explore the taxonomy of stellar explosions: dwarf novae, supernovae, hypernovae, and kilonovae. How can a white dwarf explode again and again without being destroyed? Why are some stars cannibals in binary systems? We explore neutron stars, black holes, and the deadly elegance of core collapse supernovae. What makes a pulsar pulse? Can some stars just disappear in a “dark supernova”? And what can a kilonova teach us about gold, platinum, and the origins of nitrogen in every breath we take? Plus, when will Betelgeuse explode? What’s a standard candle? We break down this vital method of measurement for astronomers and how it works. Can a star outshine the Moon? When will the last supernova go off? What shuts down star formation in galaxies? And why are astronomers obsessively watching the star T Coronae Borealis right now? All that, and more exploding-star goodness in this stellar episode of Cosmic Queries. Y'all gotta get Chuck Nice some kind of diploma. He has to have learned so much since co-hosting this podcast it deserves to be recognized.

If you could safely witness one kind of stellar explosion up close—a nova, supernova, kilonova, or hypernova—which one would you pick and why?

I know it's already been said but with no disrespect to others when Neil and Chuck are together the videos are 1000% better....the chemistry between the two of you is so much better than with others and the way chuck is able to simplify things is second to none!!

Hey Neil, I’m hooked on your show—not just because I’m a science nerd (guilty!), but mostly because your voice is so calming it’s become my personal lullaby. So thanks for feeding my brain and helping me sleep like a baby. Double win!

That was very enjoyable. Dr. Shara is an excellent guest, very informative and interesting. That is the stuff that got me into astronomy. I was always looking up from a very young child when I would be out at night playing under the stars, and throw a ball up into the sky wondering how far I can throw it up to the stars in the sky, realizing how far those stars are, and when I was finding dark locations in my teens near the beach to locate with binoculars the amazing night view. I miss that as I'm living in a fuzzy night sky area currently. Favorites are looking for meteors, meteor showers, Pleiades M45, Orion, Orion nebula M42, Casseiopeia, Ursa Major, M101, the Pinwheel galaxy to name a few. And the fascinating pulsars, quasars, neutron stars... Ad astra per aspera🌠🌌 You alone will have the stars as no one else has them...~Antoine de Saint Exupéry, The Little Prince
