Answering Questions About Time Travel, Solar Sailing & Galaxy Collisions
Cosmic Queries on Dimensions, Physics, and Cosmic Origins
Discover how 4D beings might view us, why space elevators remain impractical, and what fundamental questions Neil Tyson hopes an alien could answer.
Short Summary
- Visualize your 3D self as seen by a 4D observer, revealing internal organs instantly upon orientation change.
- Understand why efficient rocketry has rendered the decades-old concept of a tethered space elevator largely obsolete.
- Explore the nature of spacetime, confirming it defaults to "flat" unless mass/energy curves it, and investigate the possibility of spacetime acting as a lattice.
- This session tackles physics visualization, real-world engineering constraints, and deep cosmological questions submitted by the audience. Readers gain clarity on abstract concepts like higher spatial dimensions and the physics governing galaxy mergers.

Neil, no idea if you’re going to see this comment but I couldn’t not share. I’ve looked up to you and been mesmerised by you since I was a little girl (I’m 22 now). You are the reason I found such a strong love for space. Anyways, I recently enrolled at university (after taking years out of education to raise my kids) to study astronomy and planetary sciences. My dream is to get my undergrad and my masters and then get a job in the UK space agency. And it’s all because of you! So I wanted to say thankyou for inspiring that little girl to never stop looking up and wanting to know more ☺️
To the producers; We want Star Lord and Lord Nice to enjoy themselves. No matter the answer length, we just wanna have fun and that means as few rules as possible! Let em loose and let fly 😊
If I just wanted a cheap answer, I would search for it online. I watch these videos for the elaborated conversation. The shorter the video is, the sooner I have to find another video to watch.
2:35 Neil states that “thickness” is a scientific necessity
If you could ask Neil and Chuck one burning scientific question, what would you ask them?
Aww, I just love Chuck and Neil's friendship! It's so sweet when they're teasing each other and their laughter is infectious! Also proud of Chuck for doing that math, because as an artist, my brain just shuts down when people ask me to do math! Nice going! 😹👏
If time travel was possible, Neil would go back to the first episode of star talk to tell everyone that it is possible.
I've been watching your video for the last 13-14 years. You're the reason I got deeply interested in science. Now I've already completed my bachelor degree in physics and currently enrolled in the masters program. Neil, you have no idea how many people got inspired to study science by watching your show. Keep up the good work.
Book recommendation! Flatland is a short satirical story about a two-dimensional world whose residents can’t imagine anything beyond their flat plane. Through the narrator’s encounter with a three-dimensional sphere, the book explores how hard it is to see past the limits of your own perspective.
Chuck is so quick witted. He has a genius unto himself.
