The Space Race Never Ended
The Geopolitical Cycles Driving Competition in Space Exploration
Discover why the US continually reacts to geopolitical shifts—rather than leading proactively—in its pursuit of space exploration, from Sputnik to Artemis. Understand the primary motivation that fuels these massive technological endeavors.
Short Summary
- Geopolitical rivalry, not pure exploration, historically dictates the pace and scope of US space efforts.
- The original Space Race succeeded because the US perceived an existential threat posed by the USSR in technology and ideology.
- The current Artemis Program is a direct governmental reaction to China's stated ambitions to land crewed missions on the Moon.
This discussion traces the original Cold War competition, focusing on how the Soviet initial lead spurred the Apollo program. It then analyzes the subsequent budgetary hiatus and the modern renewal of focus driven entirely by perceived competition with modern China.

Just imagine how far humanity would be if we would just get along with each other. Wakeup people.!!!!
Neil has been saying this stuff for many years now. He correctly predicted that, if China were to make efforts to go to the moon/Mars, it would reignite the American government's interest in space travel.
Do you think today’s space race—with the U.S., China, and private companies all in the game—is more about science, exploration, or power?
So basically no one is going to Mars until someone one ups the other badly 😂
We wanted a For All Mankind (2019) future and we got the Idiocracy (2006) future.
That's crazy the first animal on space was a dog, the first in the billions of years of life this planet, and the lil fella had no idea
As a retired repair, service mechanic, I feel there is a truth to things and it is up to all of us to discover it. We, as a species, need to do it by working together to do it. Cutting the budget of science will not do it. Thanks for being there Neil and to scientists everywhere.
For the memory of bravest dogo ever lived “Laika” ❤
I like how you keep the conversation factual, absorbable, and poignant. Thank you for the fantastic teachings!
That basalt flag is such a flex, I didn't even know making a flag like that was possible! Plus the characteristics of that flag is incredible!
