Description

Is your gut controlling your brain? Neil deGrasse Tyson, co-hosts Gary O’Reilly and Chuck Nice, dive into the gut-brain connection, GLP-1, and how this connection plays a role in conditions like anxiety, IBS, and even neurodegenerative diseases with Emeran Mayer, a gastroenterologist and neuroscientist. What exactly is happening inside your digestive system? Emeran, author of The Mind-Gut Connection, explains how the gut has its own nervous system, harbors 70% of the immune system, and communicates with the brain through neurotransmitters, hormones, and the vagus nerve. How does this bidirectional highway influence our emotions, decision-making, and overall health? We break down why your gut may be making you anxious and why your mind may be what’s giving you IBS. Learn about what a “healthy microbiome” means and how to wade through the onslaught of internet fads. Why do some people struggle to know when they’re full? What’s the science behind GLP-1 medications, and how do they mimic the body’s natural hunger signals? Could fecal transplants restore lost gut function? We also investigate whether psychedelics interact with gut bacteria, how diet shapes brain health, and why Western medicine is only beginning to grasp the body’s interconnected systems. Plus, Chuck shares his ayahuasca experience, and we uncover the truth behind the latest gut health trends. If you’ve ever wondered why you stress-eat, get “hangry,” or crave chocolate, the answers may be inside your gut! For those bothered by the interruptions, keep in mind that Neil is a science communicator, and the dynamic between Neil and Chuck is designed to add humor and make the content more engaging for a broader audience. This isn’t intended to be a university lecture. If you’re genuinely interested in the topic or Emeran’s work, you can look up his lectures, or better yet, buy his books. I’d say this interview offers enough substance to encourage you to explore the subject more deeply.

I told my gastroenterologist over ten years ago that my stomach and gut issues was causing my anxiety; he said I was crazy. I didn’t know the connection wasn’t taken seriously in the medical field.

If your gut really has a say in how you think and feel, what decision in your life do you now blame on your stomach?

I suffered years of IBS symptoms while trying to assist my mother as her health declined toward the end of her life. The symptoms disappeared almost immediately after her death. For me, there is no doubt about a gut/brain connection.

There are no words I know of sufficient to express how much I value you all because of your love for each other, your curiosity and your joy. You will probably never see this but I just wanted to put it out there to the universe.

Please have this man back and don’t interrupt him! He was cut off so many times from both finishing his thought and sharing really good information.
