How England Colonized Time
Decoding Time Zones and the Astronomical Basis of Greenwich Mean Time
Understand why the world carved up time into distinct hourly zones and how astronomical observations led Britain to colonize global time standards. Learn the crucial astronomical reason behind Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), which corrects for Earth’s variable orbit.
Short Summary
- Time Zones resulted from the necessity of aligning local solar noon across fast-moving transportation routes, dividing the Earth into 24 hourly slices.
- Britain established the Prime Meridian (Greenwich) through superior navigational mapping of the night sky, creating a fixed reference point.
- Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) averages out orbital variations, mathematically accounting for the extra time required for the Sun to return to the meridian daily.
This discussion breaks down the arbitrary but necessary decisions behind global timekeeping. We explain the mechanics of time zones, the significance of the Prime Meridian, and the astronomical calculation underpinning GMT itself.

If America invented time, it would be a subscription model.
It should also be noted that in the 1700's an English clock maker called John Harrison, made a clock that was not affected by variations in temperature, pressure, or humidity, resisted corrosion in salt air, and was able to function on board a constantly moving ship, thus making British ships able to navigate the seas better.
"Lets go over there and I'll be on time!" Chuck is funny. The humor makes the knowledge so much more fun to gain.
I live in Greenwich, London. The observatory and old naval college is gorgeous, and is set in an equally lovely park. The Prime Meridian is marked out on the pavement in SE London, but since 1999 there’s a cool green laser that shoots out from the observatory itself that indicates the Prime Meridian.

This talk took me back to a moment in school when a question appeared on my exam paper - "Write down the expanded form of the abbreviation - GMT". I did not know, so I panicked and improvised "GovernMent Taxi". Been 30+ years, yet this video somehow helped me get closure with that little moment of fear and embarrassment :)
Reminded me of an Al Murray, Pub Landlord bit: "The sun never sets on the British Empire, because god doesn't trust us in the dark"
