Description

An earthquake swarm has struck Socorro, New Mexico directly over a recently identified giant magma chamber known as the Socorro Magma Body. Is this earthquake swarm a sign that the Socorro Magma Body - a fledging supervolcano - is awakening? Geophysicist Stefan Burns reports... My dad was a geologist in New Mexico and he always said NM was a massive Caldera. I've known about the magma chamber under Sorcoro for a long time, then you have Jemez Caldera, all the way to Carrizozo volcanic field, El Malpais Zuni-Bandera Vocanic fields and lava Falls with a spectacular cinder cones, as well as Big Tubes area, not to mention the geo thermal springs in T or C that are only a few hundred years old, also the Ice cave has a massive volcano there. There are volcanic plugs all over and cinder cinder cones all over NM even up towards Trinidad and then head toward Catron County up to Gallap more lava fields. My dad always said it was a matter of time.

My wife and I were shaken by a 3.8 magnitude earthquake on Sunday. We live in Jarales, New Mexico, south of Albuquerque.

Hey guys! Can anyone share with us more information on these ice caves in NM? I've visited one in Coudersport in PA, and this is news to me! Any theories as to how they stay cold??

The past week has been awful for me and my wife and friend who all have dysautonomia (POTS and other things that causes fainting, dizziness, fatigue, nausea, and other awfulness), and we couldn't figure out what was going on until our friend found the news about the earthquakes and suddenly everything made a lot of sense. But I even talked with my chiropractor yesterday (in Albuquerque) and he said everyone has been extremely off. So people feel earthquakes even if we don't know that we feel them.

San Francisco 1906. I was in the Loma Prieta quake in 1989. Now you're telling me I live on top of the mother of them all?

I live in Rio Rancho, basically Albuquerque for anyone outside the state. I recently learned that the Rio sits on a fault line that's splitting apart south of Los Lunas, and we experience low level earthquakes quite often. Southern NM is known for their abundant natural hot springs, especially around T or C. There are hot springs all over though, including a couple well known ones in the Jemez and near Santa Fe. All of ABQ is nestled between the granite Sandia mountains and the Tres Volcanes in the west mesa. I grew up in ventana ranch and a neighbor down the street borrowed our tiller rental while we were preparing our backyard for a small lawn, and he hit a hard lava flow under his entire yard at 3" down, the builders surely knew about it and just graded a bit of fill dirt over the top 😂 I was just out at the Valles Caldera last weekend watching the milkyway during our moonless night, the caldera is crazy and there's evidence that the depression was a mountain lake that flooded the valley below it when it erupted, there are multi-ton boulders all down the valley that have no business being there except if moved by mass amounts of water.
