Government Shutdown End Highlights Failures of the Affordable Care Act

Discover why the recent government funding bill is deemed a temporary fix, and analyze the historical promises and subsequent failures of the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

Short Summary

  • The 41-day government shutdown concluded with a bipartisan Senate bill reopening operations, temporarily delaying decisions on ACA subsidies.
  • Proponents promised lower costs, yet healthcare premiums have effectively doubled since 2010, demonstrating systemic failure in cost control.
  • Key promises, such as keeping your doctor and plan, were broken due to new mandates and required coverage changes.
  • Architects admitted the law relied on a lack of transparency to prevent the individual mandate from being scored as a tax by the CBO.
  • Proposed right-leaning solutions focused on consumer choice through HSAs, tort reform, and interstate insurance competition, which were opposed previously.

This discussion dissects the political maneuvers surrounding the shutdown funding impasse and contrasts them with the original intent and real-world inflationary consequences of the ACA. Readers will gain clarity on persistent healthcare cost drivers and the market-based alternatives proposed years ago.

Description

The shutdown is “ending,” but no one actually solved anything. It’s just another patch job with all the same problems waiting on the other side. Last week: "People are starving! We need to re-open the government now! Call your local Republican senator!" Today: "I can't believe the Democrats caved and allowed the government to reopen!" The veil might as well just not be there at this point, I don't know who they think they're fooling.

Obamacare is working as designed. It’s destroying the American healthcare system.

My dad worked a dead end job making minimum wage and could afford health care for him and my mother, plus my two brothers and I. My wife and I make way more money than my parents ever did, adjusting for inflation as well, and we barely have any money left over after paying for ourselves and our 3 kids. The fact that people watched affordable insurance go away with Obamacare and they can’t connect the dots is very mind boggling.
