Imagine if Peter Jackson said: I'm not gonna tell frodo's story because frodo's story is in the books. Fans already have that.
Like so many other game based movies, they do not take the source material seriously enough. They treat it like a kids movie upscaled for adults.

Because they don’t want to make a Resident Evil movie. They want to make a relatively low budget zombie/horror movie attached to a popular IP.
I literally forgot about the Netflix show. My brain blocked its existence that completely.
"You know what's even scarier than zombies in an old mansion? Lasers!" Yeah it's an ego thing.
Hollywood were the real evil residents all along.
The fan made film of the detective looking into the murders happening in Arklay mountain is so far the best adaptation of Resident Evil in my opinion.
When I was a kid my dream movie was Resident evil 2 beat by beat, with Leon played by Christian Slater.
