Description

In his opening keynote at the Vancouver Resource Investment Conference, Jay Martin delivers a compelling call for Canada to reclaim its identity as a resource-driven economy. Drawing on powerful historical analogies—from the rise and fall of Argentina to the economic logic behind the end of slavery—Martin argues that industrial transitions only succeed when driven by cost-efficiency, not sentiment. He warns against the narrative that Canada should abandon its competitive advantage in resource extraction to chase unrealistic energy goals, and emphasizes that responsible, domestic mining is essential for a sustainable future. Framing Canada as being at a tipping point, Martin urges policymakers and citizens alike to embrace the country's strengths and make pragmatic decisions for long-term prosperity. I don’t think there is anyone right now who doesn’t think that Canada needs to develop industry, retool existing infrastructure, expand trade, but it needs to be done thoughtfully, thinking into the future, we are not the last generation that will need clean water, resources, energy.

Just one important addition I would make especially if you are speaking in Canada. Canada banned slavery in the Upper Canada Act Against Slavery 1796. Yeah Canada!
