My mom was in Odessa pre-war (I think in 2021) and one time, as she was sitting on the bench, talking with the local woman, the latter told her "We're not Ukrainians, we're Jewish, Russians". Never been to Odessa myself, but mom says it's a beautiful city, with great people. Odessa (and I'm using Russian spelling because single "s" just doesn't do the justice to the name of the city) is inextricably connected with Russia culturally & through its heritage in general. There is even saying in Russian: Odessa-mama, Rostov-papa. I think it harkens back to the criminal past of both cities.
