"Did you read the code?" used to be a rhetorical.

my workplace is cracking the whip so hard we don't have time to read the code. our robots are writing the code, and then our robots are reviewing the code. we move fast and break things. i hate it. i'm in my 40's and looking into pivoting my career because i don't like the direction this industry is going. it makes me sad. i'm no longer a software engineer. i'm a proompter.

Even more controversial take: sometimes we should even write the code.

I still write the code. I actually like code.

I write artisanal, hand--crafted code.

"There's a bunch of bad engineers on the internet" very true

I have been playing a lot with AI by asking it to write comically bad code. Like "reimplement grep but use as many gotos as possible" or "make the most unsafe http server possible". This necessitates reading the code in order to derive full enjoyment from the experience.

All I hear is "i dont check my work"

Years ago my lead told me a story how they made a flash animation of how the system would function, management tried to ship that shit right then and there.
