Description

On this episode, I chat with Payton McNabb—a young woman on a girls' volleyball team who was famously knocked unconscious by a competitor with a penis. Of course, the real culprit here was not the teenager who spiked the volleyball into Payton's face; it was the adults who allowed him to do it. Today, I’m happy to say that those adults seem more and more likely to be remembered as the cowards they are. Cowards, who betrayed the young women they should have been protecting. Cowards, who set aside common sense and basic biology, simply because it was fashionable to do so. Cowards, who didn’t want to rock the boat, and bent to the will of a small but noisy mob. Payton McNabb tells her story plainly and powerfully. She isn't angry or bitter, nor is she looking for sympathy or publicity. In fact, she's obviously shy by nature, and not terribly enthused or excited by all the attention that's resulted from her injury. She does, however, believe she's in a position to help lots of other women who have been disadvantaged by this extraordinary delusion, and determined to do her part. And that, I think, is the opposite of cowardice. As I've said many times on this page, I am opposed to prohibiting adults from identifying in whatever way they choose, or dressing in whatever way they choose, or surgically altering their appearance in whatever way they choose. It's still a free country, mostly, and I have no interest in challenging those freedoms. But I do oppose the mentality that led to Payton's injury. And, as time goes by, I think we’re all going to look back and wonder what sort of spell was cast upon us, and why we stayed silent, when so many in positions of power and influence assured us that men had every right to bathe and compete with women. No. Absolutely not. If there is a boy on the other team you don't play against that team. If you are a parent and the coach insists on playing that team you pull your kid. This is unacceptable.

It seems just a few short years ago when a man being in a ladies room was arrested and charged with multiple crimes... as it should be.
