Description

I’ve spent years trying to stay out of politics, but every now and then, a conversation comes along that feels too important to ignore. This is one of those. My guest is Michael Cadenazzi, and he’s got what might be the best job in the Pentagon. He’s responsible for helping rebuild America’s Defense Industrial Base, which is a long way of saying he’s trying to make sure we can still build things we need to defend ourselves. Not someday but right now. On paper, that might sound like a conversation about bureaucracy. It’s not. It’s a conversation about reality. We’re talking about hundreds of thousands of open jobs that nobody seems to be filling, a growing dependence on other countries for the materials we rely on, and a skills gap that has quietly turned into something far more consequential than most people realize. Along the way, we get into the rare earth minerals, modern warfare, the future of manufacturing, and why the entire conversation around work has changed in the last few years. What struck me most about Mike is that he’s not speaking in theory—he’s in the middle of it. He sees the gaps, the urgency, and the opportunity all at the same time. And whether you care about national security, the future or work, or just where the next real opportunity might be hiding, there’s something in this conversation that’s going to make you think. I went into this one with curiosity, and I came out of it convinced we’re standing in the middle of a shift most of us don’t fully understand yet. I like Mike, and I think you will, too. My foundation is awarding millions of dollars in work ethic scholarships to men and women willing to learn a skilled trade. Just put shop classes back in junior high school and high school. In 1960 I went to a brand new junior high school that had , electric shop, metal shop, and wood shop. High School had all those shoes plus auto shop. When the Vietnam War was going on thiese classes gave me the skills to pass the Air Force aptitude tests to get in to maintenance career. I became an aircraft technician, and crewchief. Thank you Mike Row for your work in trying open the eyes of the politicians.

Bring back shop class for boys and girls. Add it to junior high. Educate them about the advantages of trade schools. How much they can make right out of school. Let them go to the trade school at the same time as their regular studies.

I began learning basic physics as a farm boy from Missouri by the age of 8 while playing with an erector set. That led me to becoming a mechanic, machinist, fabricator, welder, woodworker/carpenter/plumber, electrician, helicopter pilot, fireman, EMT, and millwright. 68 years old and still learning. But your kids useful toys.

Begin with the end in mind. I suggest you double or triple the pay for laborers, carpenters, masons ,iron workers, plumbers and electricians and operators so we can build foundations. Without that work being done first you don’t need machinest, engineers, or rocket scientists. At 68 years old I was 6 years older than the oldest worker on the soo locks! I started full time at 16 in the carpenters union, retired at 56 but they call us old guys back to work, still pay our pensions because nobody wants to drive piling, set form work and pour concrete anymore for any rate of pay. Not only that ,getting workers that can pass a drug test eliminates 90% of the tradesman. The problem is way worse than anyone can imagine. God help us and God help you in your efforts to turn this country around !😎

Great episode, he seems like a genuine man, we need more people who care about our country's future and less about playing party politics. WE NEED MORE MEN AND WOMEN THAT HAVE A SPINE, AND WHO PUTS AMERICA FIRST. We're on the right path to fixing the mess that prior administrations had made, this will take years to fix and I'm hoping we as a country can stay focused on that objective, and we need to vote with that in mind to. Just remember you will never get 100% of what you want from the party we voted for but as long as it's decent with AMERICA first and our nation doesn't go backwards again, we can fix this

School districts 25 yrs ago were told to focus on college, now our 40 somethings are flipping burgers . I ran for school board in those years supporting trades and didn't stand a chance.

I still believe that much of the problem goes back to our screwed up educational system that for many years has been a shill for a slanted view, encouraging many students to go to college and government programs that student loans to these kids going to college and into debt, taking classes which dont lead to marketable skills. They end up with huge debt and no job and future. Many do get jobs, but not because of college.

Happening here in Virginia, eventually. "Virginia Peninsula Community College (VPCC) is building a $9 million, 16,000-square-foot trades center in Newport News, scheduled for early 2026, to train over 400 students annually for high-demand maritime and construction jobs. The facility supports local workforce needs, particularly for partners like Newport News Shipbuilding, with training in welding, electrical, and structural fitting."

One of your best Mike! How are you going to tap into the homeschool community? More out of the box thinkers will come from that sector. My grandson is (objectively) highly intelligent and will be home schooled. We’re in rural Tennessee and his dad is developing a dirt work company that he could step into but as I watch this episode, I’m thinking there could be other opportunities for him to excel and serve the country. I’m going to try and get his parents to watch this. They love you but are of the “Reel” generation so I’ll have to bully them to watch a long form cast. You’re one of the most consequential people of our time and I thank you deeply for bolstering the blue collar world. You’ve made an immeasurable difference. ❤
