US Policy Debate: Denying Visas Over Obesity and Healthcare Burden

Explore arguments connecting foreign obesity to US healthcare strain and debate where personal responsibility ends and government intervention begins regarding health policy.

Short Summary

  • The administration is considering denying US visas to foreigners deemed obese, citing potential burdens on the state healthcare system.
  • Speakers assert that if a single-payer system (like Medicare for All) is adopted, individual nutrition choices immediately become public policy.
  • The discussion pivots to the irony of limiting foreign obesity when US healthcare costs are already high due to domestic health issues.

This segment analyzes the implications of health criteria in immigration policy, drawing strong links between societal healthcare funding models and individual freedoms over diet and exercise.

Just make the gates at the border more narrow, it'll solve itself.

My buddy was on a European cruise. He had a heart attack and was brought to a hospital in England. The government seized his passport until he paid his hospital bill. So why shouldn’t the US make sure medical expenses are carried by the people who use them

Trust me, you don't want a health care system like in Canada! Canada is the WORST! I had a cardiac incident, I was told by TWO nurses to go to the ER immediately, so I went. The first facility discharged me WITHOUT any tests. They simply said that it was not that they could not do anything, they were just unwilling to do anything. So, off to the second facility where I was berated for wasting their time while my heart rate was measured at 146 bpm and with extremely high blood pressure. Two days later it was confirmed by my doctor (from the tests that the second facility did), that I did actually did have a heart attack, and then I was visited by Calgary police (at work) to inform me that I am trespassed from AHS operated facilities and under investigation for abusing emergency services. Sadly, that is not even half of what I had been through by AHS.

When I immigrated to the US there were specific health requirements which had to be signed off by a physician. I don't see why this is controversial at all.

9:04 He's not wrong. What's in the food is a HUGE part of it. Americans today are not eating the same things they were 100 years ago. Even the composition of the animal products has changed based on what livestock is fed these days.

New Zealand has been doing this for years. You cant be sick or unhealthy in any way. And cant be over 28 or 31 yo.. you literally cannot move there if your old. This was 10 years ago.

I understand that we can't afford to bring in hundreds of thousands of people that have to be taken care of by our tax dollars, our tax dollars aren't infinite
