UBI Feasibility and the Return of Feudal Economic Structures

Evaluate why Universal Basic Income (UBI) proposals might fail due to societal moral fitness and automated labor displacement. Readers will see the critical role of culture and contribution in sustaining any large-scale income distribution system.

Short Summary

  • The abuse observed in existing welfare programs suggests UBI cannot function without fundamental societal or moral restructuring.
  • Small-scale communes or communities succeed economically when high trust and shared morality exist, contrasting with large, diverse societies.
  • Future mass automation creates an owner class and a consumer class, potentially leading back toward neo-feudal systems managed by powerful entities (House Musk, House Bezos).
  • The conversation shifts from whether people are lazy to whether large populations will become unemployable due to technological obsolescence, challenging traditional conservative views on work.

This discussion explores the viability of UBI in a highly automated future, contrasting the requirements for successful income redistribution (shared morality) against current societal fragmentation. The dialogue moves from analyzing SNAP abuse to predicting structural changes that resemble historical feudalism if widespread contribution ceases.

We are low middle-class. I don’t want the government to tax me, to then give me back a “universal basic income” check. I just want them to stop taxing me into poverty, and leave me alone to go earn my own income.

It needs an overhaul. The rampant fraud has to end. It needs to be for emergencies and people who are elderly or disabled. Only citizens. Communities, churches and charities can help supply them if they choose. Not the government.

Considering how riddled with fraud, neglegence, and waste it is, SNAP should be DISMANTLED.

Social welfare systems cannot work in a low-trust society. Widespread corruption is an eventual inevitability...and that's where we are now.

This abuse has been going on for 30 + years my neighbor used to sell his food stamps so he could buy cigarettes and booze. Not to feed his kids. !!!!! FOR 50¢ on the dollar.

Ive posted this before but its still a true story: I moved to a city as a youth and struggled greatly to get enough for shelter and food. I remember the first time I saw people using this. There was a grocery store and huge overweight women were pushing carts with 100s of dollars of groceries through the line, then used a card and got them for free. Out in the parking lot were their brand new Cadillac SUVs with rims on them costing 1000s of dollars, and the women were covered in gaudy gold colored jewelry and bright robes. And here I was filling the car up with a quart of oil because it would leak out on the way, then returning to 2 br apt with 6 people living in it, carrying a bag with Raman noodles and a few potatos. And the money used to feed those people came out of my check from my wages. Never forgot that, and never will accept it. Its a bad system.
