I can't help but think that science and space observation / exploration doesn't move fast enough. But, then I'm reminded of just how far we've come. 100 years ago, rocketry was just an idea. Telescopes were still in their infancy. Now, we're gaining new insights into the shape and structure of our universe.

Maybe magnetism is more important than we think

So we’re on the unfashionable outer edge of the galaxy in the unfashionable outer edge of the galactic cluster.

I think astronomers suspect this since a long time (in modern time), the entire local group is defined by a connection of matter that stretch all the way in our supercluster complex, aka it encompass an enormous structure or "filament" that stretch all the way in the Laniakea group and branch in it, it even have a name that point the supposed beginning and end but i can't be bothered finding the exact name, you can probably dig it somewhere on the net. It's actually fascinating that we are even able to "map" such structures of unimaginable dimension. Not sure what dark matter have anything related to this though, you really don't need it at any point to explain this phenomenon, maybe i'm missing something?

Can't help but notice the shape is similar to the electromagnetic field around a magnet

Anton, let's break out the maple syrup; it won't hurt any of us.
