It seems insane now, but before we went to the moon, there was real concern that the surface might be several meters thick loose fine regolith that the lander could sink in and would act like quicksand for astronauts trying to walk around on.

The fact that pluto was discovered hardly a century ago as a tiny speck in the telescopes of contemporary astronomers and now we're getting descriptions of a planet over 60 thousand times more distant is extraordinary.
