Solving the Mystery of Giant Siberian Gas Emission Craters

Uncover the new scientific model explaining the powerful explosions that created massive Siberian craters and understand why these events signal critical planetary changes.

Short Summary

  • The mechanism behind the mysterious, explosive Giant Gas Emission Craters (GECs) has been scientifically modeled, linking deep gas reserves, geological faults, and melting permafrost.
  • This violent process is accelerated by rising global temperatures, making these craters a visible indicator of thawing Arctic conditions.
  • The widespread release of trapped methane potentially initiates a powerful, self-sustaining greenhouse feedback loop.

This review details the finalized theory published in a recent study explaining the GECs spotted since 2012 in Western Siberia. The mechanism involves deep natural gas accumulation, accelerated by warming, leading to catastrophic failure of the overlying permafrost seal. Understanding this specific mechanism helps us predict future climate impacts.

Note the size of the hole yet the lack surrounding ejecta, that indicates how much ice and gas was involved, if memory serves, methane can explode at 9% or close to it. These events are also known as 'pingo's', I remember when this happening in Yamal was discovered by a Russian well drilling team en route to the work site when they flew above this in their helicopter. Kinda mind blowing, but nothing new over there, just underreported, I refer to the work by Igor Semiletov and Natalia Shakhova based at the International Arctic Research Center in Fairbanks, Alaska. They have DECADES of research of methane venting from the Laptev Sea, check them out. Just by the by, one of the hazards of sailing through the Laptev Sea is to have a pingo go off under your ship, which, if significant enough of an eruption, can sink your ship!!!

Besides methane, Hydrogen is a possible explosive gas that can explain these craters. Both methane and Hydrogen are products of serpentinization, a metamorphic reaction where igneous rocks are altered by water and CO2 and emit heat and these gases.
