South Atlantic Magnetic Anomaly Is Growing in a Bizarre Way
Rapid Changes in Earth's South Atlantic Magnetic Anomaly and Polar Fields
Discover how high-precision satellite data reveals the massive South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA) is growing and potentially splitting, alongside dramatic, unequal shifts occurring near the magnetic poles. This impacts vital space infrastructure that needs immediate attention from operators and engineers.
Short Summary
- The South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA), a major magnetic weak spot, is expanding quickly, growing by 0.9% of Earth's surface area since 2014.
- The SAA exhibits complex changes, suggesting it may be developing into two separate magnetic cells due to internal core fluctuations.
- Simultaneously, the magnetic field protecting northern Canada is weakening significantly while the field over Siberia strengthens rapidly.
- These findings, primarily derived from ESA's Swarm missions, highlight active, poorly understood dynamics deep within the Earth's outer core.
- Understanding these magnetic shifts is crucial for protecting the growing number of satellites expected to launch in the coming years.
This document explores the recent findings regarding anomalies in Earth's magnetosphere, generated by the turbulent liquid outer core. We analyze the expansion and evolution of the South Atlantic Anomaly and the contrasting changes seen in the northern polar magnetic regions, detailing how these events affect orbiting technology and warrant deep scientific attention.

The argentine peso sunk so hard it affected the earths core gawdam
In a YouTube filled with crap AI narration, Anton's voice and cadence is like a glass of cold sweet tea on a hot summer day. Bonus because I can actually LEARN something 😊
I wonder if any of this is connected to my fridge magnet falling off this morning...
I heard of the South American magnetic anomaly in the 1970's, when I studied Earth's magnetic field use on navigation as I became a commercial pilot.

the magnetic anomaly took the "come to brazil" thing a bit too literally
Anton, thx for including your scientific reference papers.
I clicked for the delivery of a magnetic field update, but Anton deadpanning a Trudeau joke was way funnier than I was prepared for lol 😂
Anton! I’m shocked! (~ 8:50) You actually made a joke, AND it was even quite funny. We need more of your jokes. 😂
Learned something new. Thank you. When clay (or other clay-rich materials) is fired (e.g., kiln-fired pottery, bricks) and then cools, certain magnetic minerals (like magnetite/iron oxides) in the clay can align with the local Earth’s magnetic field at the time of cooling. Once they’ve cooled below their “blocking temperature”, that alignment becomes locked in. This is called thermoremanent magnetization (TRM).
