The soldier that told them about Scar near the end, was played by Patrick Wayne, The Duke's son.

John Wayne was so proud of his performance in this movie he named his son Ethan.

A sweet story:John Wayne found Beulah Archiletta who played "Look" (the native woman Martin accidentally marries) crying on the set one day. She told him her son was getting married that weekend and she couldn't be there because of the filming schedule. John shut down the production for a few days and made sure Beulah made it to the ceremony to celebrate with her family.

"Where is he going now?" That last shot was very intentional. First, because Wayne struck a pose used by the great early Western actor, Harry Carey. As others have said, it was a tribute to him. He'd recently passed. Second, because Ethan is seen from the "civilization" of the house, standing against the wild country. He will never really belong with the other people, and he walks away into the wilderness.

I was at a military school when this came out, so I watched it with an audience of young men. All of the oxygen was sucked out of the theater when Natalie Wood's face popped onto the screen.

This is considered one of the greatest westerns ever made. It's influence cannot be overstated. Spielberg, Lucas, Scorsese to name three all have stated this movie influenced them in one way or another.

Orson Welles was known to have said: "The three greatest American directors are John Ford, John Ford and John Ford."

The ending of this movie really made it. The main character and the hero of the story is cast aside in the end. Just like in the Seven Samurai, he has no place in the world that he bled and killed to create or defend. A very poignant statement that many veterans can relate to. Your innocence was the price paid so others can have theirs.

The ending of "The Searchers" is one of the most analysed, interpreted and symbolic endings in all of movie history.
