Jennifer Connolly in a white satin dress rocketed me into puberty at 11 when this movie came out.

i worked at ILM at the time. it was wonderful visiting the stop-motion being done on a 12 inch (or so) puppet of the rocketeer that ended up looking SO LIFELIKE! and as i was working nights, i got to be in the crowd watching them blow up the 50 foot (or so) model of the dirigible (which had to be re-built and re-exploded due to an undesirable way the explosives ignited the first time!!!). i was part of a 2D animation team that hand-drew, on paper (and reviewed on the shittiest vhs video pencil tester imaginable) the fire from the rocket jets, and ground shadows (cast by objects that weren't actually there when the live-action was shot), among other things. also animated effect tracked via "motion control" (computers + stepper motors) to add the glowing flare composited with the live-action actor footage tracking the explosives triggered on-set.

"The Rocketeer" is not a blockbuster movie, but it has always been one of my favorites. I am so glad that you guys decided to check it out. "Rocka-who?"

Director Joe Johnston not only directed the first Captain America film, Jumanji, Honey I Shrunk The Kids, Jurassic Park III, and others, but he started as art director for the original Star Wars and Indiana Jones trilogies, designing iconic things like the Millennium Falcon and Boba Fett’s costume, as well as drawing storyboards.

Timothy Dalton was Bond in two films, "The Living Daylights (1987) and "License To Kill" (1989).

The tall strange faced man in the movie is an homage to the actor Rondo Hatton. He was a former journalist and soldier whose distinct facial features were the result of acromegaly, a pituitary gland disorder. He is best known for portraying hulking mob enforcers and the cult-classic horror villain "The Creeper" in 1940s Universal films.

The moustache was a hint, but the sword fight gave it away: the actor villain is BASED ON Errol Flynn. The sword fight, and the costumes, scream "Robin Hood".
