Peter Stormare as lucifer is ๐ฅ
One of Keanu's most iconic roles. Trashed by critics, but well loved. He has said he would love to play this part again.
What I love most about this movie is that it does not stop to explain things to you. There's a lot of wonderful realizations and discoveries for many times watching it.
Johnโs not a priest. Heโs more of a super natural/occult private detective.
"Are we dealing with the supernatural here" made me actually laugh out loud
โAre you going down? โNot if I can help it.โ Iconic line.
Peter Stormare was amazing as Satan. In the original script Satan is dressed in black leather with spikes like a biker. It was Stormareโs idea to give him the white suit but have tar dripping from his feet. Just a brilliant depiction.
This is the movie that made me fall in love with Tilda Swinton as an actor. Her performance as Gabriel is soooooo good. Feels so real, relatable, and understandable for the character to believe and do as they do. Equal parts creepy, inspirational, and sympathetic.
When Constantine cuts his wrists to summon Lucifer, he cut through tendons which is why he was unable to manipulate his lighter to light his cigarette. Later, when Constantine is ascending (37:20) IIRC the director said the same Divine force lifting him up was also moving his hand. ...in other words, God was giving Lucifer the finger!
The priest trying to drink is like a real nightmare. When you are ill, having a fever dream and being thirsty, nothing quenching your thirst. A powerful scene.
