My husband and I visited the Chimera fires in Turkey and we cooked sausages on them! I didn't know there were eternal fires in Australia, thanks for this episode Anton!
7:44 One theory is that lignin-digesting enzymes hadn't evolved yet so all the fallen trees just lied there until they were covered by other layers.
I remember riding a train through Utah in the US, and the conductor coming on the PA system to say we were passing a mountain where a coal fire had been burning for hundreds of years. Now, looking it up, it seems that a fire under the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument has been burning for a lot longer than that! Get well soon!
